Introducing the SSI Lionfish Awareness Specialty: Roger’s New Course
Something extraordinary is coming to the world of lionfish education — and it comes directly from one of the most experienced lionfish advocates in the diving world.
Roger J. Muller Jr., SSI Divemaster Instructor and founder of LionfishDivers.com, has submitted a new Distinctive Specialty program to SSI called the Lionfish Awareness course. This is not a modification of an existing curriculum; it’s a wholly original program developed from more than a decade of real-world lionfish hunting, education, and conservation work.

What Is a Distinctive Specialty?
SSI’s Distinctive Specialty program allows qualified SSI instructors and dive professionals to develop and teach unique, specialized courses that go beyond SSI’s standard curriculum. These courses must meet SSI’s educational and safety standards, but the content, emphasis, and design come from the instructor’s own expertise and experience.
Roger’s submission of the Lionfish Awareness Distinctive Specialty represents years of accumulated knowledge — from the biology of the fish, to the equipment used to hunt them, to the culinary story of why eating them matters, to the conservation networks that have grown around the issue.
What Will the Course Cover?
Lionfish Biology and Identification
Students will learn to identify both invasive Atlantic lionfish species (Pterois volitans and Pterois miles), understand their reproductive biology, feeding behavior, venom system, and the specific characteristics that make them such effective invaders.
The Ecological Impact
The course will quantify the lionfish’s impact on Atlantic reef ecosystems with current scientific data — prey species reduction, juvenile fish population collapse, competition with native predators, and projections for long-term reef health.
Hunting Skills and Safety
All the practical skills you need: pole spear technique, containment protocols, shore and boat diving tactics for lionfish, and comprehensive safety instruction for handling venomous fish.
The Culinary Connection
What sets this course apart is its integration of the culinary narrative. Students will understand why creating consumer demand for lionfish as food is one of the most powerful tools in the conservation toolkit and how to talk about lionfish as a dining experience.
Advocacy and Education
Graduates will leave the course not just as competent hunters, but as informed advocates, able to share the lionfish story with non-divers, children, restaurants, and media.
When Will It Be Available?
The course has been submitted to SSI and certification information is coming soon! Roger will announce certification availability through LionfishDivers.com and his social media channels. This course will be a milestone in lionfish education.
