Lionfish Hunting in Jamaica: Diving the Land of Wood and Water
Jamaica is world-famous for its music, its culture, and its cuisine. But beneath the turquoise waters of the Jamaican coast lies something far less celebrated: one of the most vibrant and threatened reef ecosystems in the Caribbean, under constant pressure from the lionfish invasion.
Roger J. Muller Jr. traveled to Jamaica as part of his ongoing multi-year campaign to dive and hunt lionfish throughout the Caribbean. Here’s what he found, and what you should know before planning your own Jamaican lionfish dive.

Jamaica’s Reef Situation
Jamaica’s reefs have faced decades of pressure from a combination of overfishing, coastal development, and bleaching events. The lionfish invasion has added another layer of stress to already-challenged ecosystems. But there is genuine hope: marine protected areas are expanding, the diving community is engaged, and visitors who hunt lionfish are making a tangible contribution.
Best Dive Areas in Jamaica for Lionfish
The north coast around Montego Bay and Negril offers the most established dive infrastructure, with calm conditions and reliable visibility. The south coast, particularly around Port Royal, has a fascinating combination of historical dive sites (Port Royal was once called ‘the wickedest city on Earth’ before a 1692 earthquake submerged much of it) and active reef structure.
- Montego Bay Marine Park: Reef zones with decent current and good lionfish populations in ledges.
- Negril Coral Reef: Extensive shallow reef running along the famous seven-mile beach.
- Port Royal: A historical dive site with unique underwater urban features and lots of lionfish.

Cooking Lionfish in Jamaica
Jamaica has one of the great culinary traditions of the Caribbean, and lionfish fits right in. Its firm, white, slightly sweet flesh takes beautifully to Jamaican seasonings of jerk spice, scotch bonnet heat, and allspice. Roger shared a meal of freshly caught lionfish seasoned Jamaican-style during his visit, and the result was exceptional. More on lionfish cooking in our dedicated recipe blogs!
Hunting Logistics in Jamaica
Jamaica has provisions for lionfish removal within its marine protected areas for licensed divers and registered operations. Check with local dive shops before hunting — regulations do vary by zone. Several operators around Montego Bay and Negril actively support visiting lionfish hunters and provide equipment. View Jamaica hunting videos.
