Lionfish Hunting 101: Getting Started with the Right Equipment

So you’ve decided you want to help fight the lionfish invasion — great decision! But before you grab any old spear and head underwater, it’s important to know what equipment the pros use. Lionfish hunting requires specific tools designed for safety, efficiency, and the protection of both the diver and the reef.

At LionfishDivers.com, Roger J. Muller Jr. has spent years in the water testing gear across destinations from Aruba to Dominica to Honduras. Here’s his breakdown of the essential lionfish hunting toolkit.

The Lionator Spear

The Lionator is one of the most popular lionfish-specific spears on the market, and for good reason. Purpose-built for hunting lionfish, it features a multi-pronged tip that maximizes your chance of a clean shot even if the fish makes a last-second move. The handle is ergonomic and easy to manage even with gloves on, and the overall design allows precise targeting in tight reef crevices where lionfish love to hide.

The key to success with the Lionator or any pole spear is patience. Lionfish are not particularly skittish, which makes them somewhat easy targets, but a clean shot placement is still essential to reduce suffering and prevent the fish from hiding in a crack where it can’t be retrieved.

The FoldSpear

The FoldSpear is a game-changer for traveling divers. As the name implies, it folds down to a compact size that fits easily in carry-on luggage or a gear bag, making it ideal for lionfish hunting trips to Aruba, Roatán, Jamaica, or anywhere else you’re flying with equipment. Don’t let the compact size fool you: the FoldSpear is rigid, responsive, and accurate when deployed underwater. Roger never leaves for an international dive trip without his FoldSpear.

The Zookeeper Containment Tube

Here’s where safety really enters the picture. The Zookeeper is a specially designed tube used to contain harvested lionfish underwater without exposing the diver to the fish’s venomous spines. You simply guide the speared fish into the tube — the one-way entry mechanism locks it in place — and continue your dive without risking a painful sting.

Without a proper containment device, transferring a speared lionfish to a bag or cooler can lead to accidental envenomation. The Zookeeper eliminates that risk almost entirely and has become a standard piece of equipment for any serious lionfish diver.

Other Gear Essentials

  • Heavy-duty gloves: Don’t even think about handling lionfish bare-handed.
  • Mesh catch bag: For shore dives where you can’t immediately transfer to a cooler.
  • Dive knife or shears: Helpful for situations where spines need to be clipped.
  • Dive light: Lionfish are often found in shaded overhangs and ledges where a light reveals them.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: Always protect the reef while you’re protecting it.

Getting Certified

Knowing the gear is just the beginning. If you want to hunt lionfish responsibly and legally in all Caribbean destinations, consider getting certified through SSI’s Invasive Species Management course — or, coming soon, Roger’s own SSI Lionfish Awareness specialty program.
