Lionfish Hunting in Dominica: The Nature Island’s Hidden Battle

Dominica is not the most famous Caribbean dive destination, and that’s precisely why it’s one of the best. The self-described ‘Nature Island of the Caribbean’ offers volcanic black sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, geothermal vents on the seafloor, and some of the most dramatic reef walls in the entire Caribbean Sea.

Roger J. Muller Jr. has dived Dominica multiple times over the past several years, and on every trip, the lionfish are there too. Here’s his account of hunting lionfish in one of the Caribbean’s most extraordinary underwater environments.

Diving in Dominica

Unlike most Caribbean islands, Dominica doesn’t have extensive barrier reefs. What it has instead are steep volcanic walls, seamounts, and extraordinary biodiversity driven by nutrient-rich upwellings. You might dive alongside seahorses, frogfish, spotted drums, and whale sharks — all within the same week.

The diving here is not for the faint-hearted. Currents can run strong, and many of the best sites require a capable boat operation to access safely. But for an experienced diver willing to put in the effort, Dominica delivers experiences unlike anywhere else.

Lionfish on Dominica’s Walls

The steep walls and overhangs that make Dominica diving so spectacular also make it prime lionfish habitat. These ambush predators thrive in the ledges and crevices of volcanic wall formations, hovering in the dim transition zone between the bright upper reef and the darkness below. Roger has encountered some exceptionally large specimens here — fish that have clearly been feeding well in relatively undisturbed territory.

Conservation in Dominica

The dive community in Dominica is small but deeply committed to reef health. Local dive operators actively partner with visiting hunters, and catch-and-eat programs have gained traction in local restaurants eager to offer lionfish on their menus. Roger connected with local operators to share techniques and equipment recommendations during his visits.
