b'The purpose of the meeting and documentary was to create an info platform for Dr. Ulman to take back to the Mediterranean to help infl uence policy makers and guide selections of control optionsfor the invasion, now fully underway there. Our Western scientists shared what has worked, and what has not, for controlling the Caribbean/Gulf invasion, learned over the last two decades.Allowing scuba divers to spear lionfi sh, doing education, holding derbies and festivals, and promoting the sale and consumption of lionfi sh are all strategies that have worked. Bounties did not work, nor did subsidizing the price of lionfi sh for sale. Feeding freshly speared lionfi sh to potential marine predators is also something that has not worked, and actually became quite dangerous in practice. Once the documentary is completed, Dr. Ulman can use it to show lawmakers why policies need to change to permit spearing lionfi sh on scuba, which is largely banned through-out the region.
